Life's five- and 10-year rules

Life can seem brutal and daunting at times. It may be a Monday morning in which the demands of your job are nearly too much. It may be a heartbreak that never seems to get better.

We all struggle with difficult times, but what makes the difference for those that come out of the conflict and those that seem forever stuck... Perspective!

My wonderful step-dad Jim Mullins taught me one of the most important lessons of my life. It was what he called the five- and 10-year rule.

Here it is: When dealing with a problem, stress or heartbreak ask yourself this: Will it matter in five years? Will it matter in 10 years? If you answer yes, then you need to focus and find the best solution. If the answer is no, then you need to brush it off and move on.

Remember this the next time something seems to be a forever challenge. Maybe you just need to pass it like a kidney stone!
